Hosting is more than housing

The Ocalenie Foundation is part of the Erasmus+ project “Unity in Integration: Strengthening Accommodation Programs for Refugee Welcome Organizations.” It participates in the project together with Refugees Welcome Italia and the Association for Integration and Migration from the Czech Republic. Its goal is to improve the quality, sustainability, and flexibility of refugee hosting programs.

All three organizations are part of Refugees Welcome International (RWI). It is a network that, since 2014, has been connecting refugees with local residents willing to share rooms in their homes. The simple idea of a network has grown into a movement spanning more than a dozen countries, using everyday hospitality to support social integration and break down prejudices. Refugees Welcome International proves that integration can start at the kitchen table. For over ten years, thousands of hosts have been supporting a sense of dignity and stability and becoming the first friends in a new environment.

As part of the Erasmus+ project, guidelines have been developed for hosts, national branches of Refugees Welcome International, and partner organizations that design or implement refugee hosting programs. The practical recommendations contained therein aim to:

  • help better respond to the needs of refugees,
  • facilitate the process of sharing accommodation for hosts,
  • support the building of local communities.

The guidelines can also be adapted by other organizations working in the field of refugee accommodation.

We encourage you to read them!
